Minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the first question every buyer asks — and often the gate that decides whether a project starts. Here is what actually drives pouch MOQ, and how to bring it down so you can test the market without over-committing inventory.
Every pouch runs on shared equipment: printing cylinders or digital plates, laminating rolls and bag-making tooling. Suppliers recover that fixed setup cost across the run, so a small order carries the same setup as a large one — spread over fewer units, the per-piece price rises. MOQ is simply the volume at which the line runs efficiently. Understanding this lets you negotiate on the setup, not just the unit price.
Four variables matter most. Print method: gravure needs engraved cylinders (high fixed cost, low unit cost at volume); digital needs none. Material structure: a foil-laminated stand up pouch uses more film and barrier layers than a mono-material film, raising both cost and MOQ. Pouch format: a zipper, valve or shaped die-cut adds tooling. Size & colour count: wider web and 10-colour jobs consume more setup. Tell us these four and we quote the true MOQ.
Three proven levers. (1) Choose digital printing for the first run — no cylinders means MOQ can drop to 500–1,000 pieces. (2) Use stock sizes instead of fully custom dimensions to skip format tooling. (3) Combine a small batch with a preprinted sample so you validate shelf appeal before a full gravure run. Many brands launch at low MOQ, then scale to gravure once demand is proven.
As a rule of thumb: digital-print kraft and flat pouches start near 500–1,000 pcs; foil-laminated stand up pouches around 1,000–5,000 pcs; spout and shaped pouches 5,000+ pcs because of extra tooling. These are starting points — share your spec and we confirm the exact number.
